Assignment 3: Hi Key/Low Key

I learned a lot about exposure here. Specifically, that it's relative. However, the thing that was the most important was that I really started to enjoy doing this assignment. I was particularly proud of the image below which, even though it doesn't quite fit the assignment because it's a little brown, I really enjoyed taking.

Assignment 2: Numbers

This assignment was nice, but difficult for me. I found it really stressful because I was always worried about being able to find my next number. I even wrote down every number and started collecting them and brainstorming for a while then shooting. I also really had a hard time not taking multiple images because I'd take a while setting up a shot sometimes and then I could only take one and it wouldn't work so it was really frustrating to set up a shot and not be able to get a decent photo from it. But it did force me to work a little harder to understand my light meter and exposure and my guesses at what would create good exposure got better, but there were still a lot of images that didn't shoot right. So hard work but I think a good assignment at all and I was pleasantly surprised by a couple photos.

Goals for this Class

My goal for this class breaks down in to two things.

First, I hope to expand my knowledge of composition, color, and other principles that relate to all areas of art. I think that knowledge in one area can always translate to other areas so that even though I think of myself as a designer, not a photographer, learning to take great photographs can help me in this.

But more importantly, I'm hoping to increase my ability to express emotion through photography. i think my greatest weakness is knowing how and when to express these things through art because I often assume anything I could create that would be emotional for me would be cliche or trite to other people and so I am not as bold as I wish I was. I tend to be much more systematic and outwardly oriented when I design at this time and I hope that photography will give me a medium to explore this most important part of art.
